WHAT IS A PRODUCER (AND WHY DO I NEED ONE?)

By Bryan Cole

Over the years, the role of the music producer has evolved and taken on many definitions—often shaped by the genre and nature of the project. But at its core, the producer is the creative and logistical backbone of any successful recording.

According to Wikipedia, a record producer is “an individual who oversees and manages the recording of an artist's music.” More specifically, a producer acts as the project’s overall supervisor, responsible for a wide range of creative and technical tasks. These typically include guiding recording sessions, ensuring strong performances, supervising engineering, and managing both the team and production timeline.

In my 20+ years as a professional producer, I’ve found that the role often extends far beyond that definition. My job doesn’t stop at simply pressing ‘record.’ I help artists source the right songs, assemble the best session musicians, secure the ideal studio environment, and, when needed, step in as a player myself. I’ve provided vocal coaching, refined song arrangements, and in many cases, helped pitch the final product to industry professionals—managers, labels, and PR firms alike.

While I don’t formally identify as a recording engineer, I do mix the majority of the projects I produce. Mixing is a true passion of mine, and I take great pride in delivering mixes that elevate a song’s full potential.

Now you might ask: “Why do I need a producer in 2025? I already know how I want my songs to sound. My band has rehearsed and demoed everything. Why bring someone else in to shape what’s already mine?”

That’s a fair question—and the answer can be both simple and complex. If I can understand your artistic vision, and help you see your work from a fresh perspective—whether through vocal direction, performance guidance, or subtle arrangement tweaks—then I can help you refine your sound without compromising your identity. And that, ultimately, is the role of a great producer.

Some clients hire me solely as a mixing engineer or a vocal producer. Others bring me on to manage the entire project, from budget oversight to selecting the right material. Every project is unique, and my approach adapts accordingly.

At the end of the day, the right producer doesn’t change who you are—they help you become the best version of yourself, musically and creatively. That’s why, even in today’s ever-changing industry, the role of a record producer remains as vital as ever.
